Vanier Park Lease

Vanier Park is Federal Government land that is leased to the City of Vancouver. The terms of the lease say specifically that the park can only be used for “public park, museum and recreation purposes and solely for these purposes” and lands can only be removed from the lease for "public purposes".

Given this explicit statement, the decision by the Government of Canada to give away a piece of public parkland for an unnecessary road, whose only beneficiary is a private real estate developer, is hardly a "public purpose".
